New York State Security Guard Training
Initial Training Requirements:
8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training- A general introductory course. You must complete this course and submit a copy of the certificate issued to you with your security guard application.16 Hour On-The-Job Training (OJT) - A course relevant to the duties of guards, requirements of the work site, and the needs of the employer. You must complete this training within 90 days of employment as a security guard.
Annual Training Requirement:
8 Hour Annual In-Service Training - This course must be completed each calendar year you hold a security guard registration. Your registration is issued for two years, therefore, you must complete two 8 Hour Annual In-Service training courses within your registration effective and expiration dates to be eligible for renewal.
New York State Armed Security Guard Training
***Must have NYS SECURITY GUARD LICENSE, NY CCW, AND MUST HAVE LEGALLY REGISTERED FIREARM IN YOUR NAME***

You must complete this course and submit a copy of the certificate issued to you with your security guard application. 47 Hour Firearms Training - You must possess a valid NYS Pistol Permit and security guard registration to enroll in this course. Upon successful completion of this course, submit a copy of the certificate with your application for an armed guard registration upgrade.Annual Training Requirement:
8 Hour Annual In-Service Training - This course must be completed each calendar year you hold an armed security guard registration. Your registration is issued for two years, therefore, you must complete two 8 Hour Annual In-Service training courses within your registration effective and expiration dates to be eligible for renewal; and 8 Hour Annual Firearms Training - This course must also be completed each calendar year you hold an armed security guard registration. Your registration is issued for two years, therefore, you must complete two 8 Hour Annual Firearms training courses within your registration effective and expiration dates to be eligible for renewal.
New Jersey Security Officers Registration Act (SORA)
As of 2007, SORA training is mandated for all contract security positions throughout New Jersey. SORA training is a 3 step process to be completed within a 30 day period. These steps currently include registration with the New Jersey State Police (NJSP), completing a 24 hour training program with a NJSP certified instructor, and fingerprinting. Proper government issued identification is required for each step.

- Suicide Bombs and Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIED's)
- First Aid Awareness
- Incident Command System
- Ethics
- Report Writing
- Street Gangs

New York State Security Guard Training
All Security Officers unarmed or armed have to be licensed by the state of CT. If you are looking to become and Armed Security Officer (Blue Card) you will need to have additional training.
Unarmed Training:
Security personnel, uniformed or not, working with a firearm in the course of their assigned duties, must posses a “Class 1” endorsement on their state permit.
Students must qualify with the firearm they will be working with for the job. *Please Note: As of October 1, 2004, it will be a prerequisite that all Armed Security Officers will need to qualify on a yearly basis with the firearm that they will be using in the capacity of their employment position. Documentation of this training must be supplied to the Special Licensing & Firearms Unit.

- 8hr. Criminal Justice Training/Introduction to First Aid
- Fingerprinting is included in the cost of class

Course content includes:
- Understanding CT Firearm law relative to the use of force in self-defense
- Legal justification for the use of force
- Alternatives to the use of deadly force
- Re-certification is required on an annual basis and the material covered is required by the state
- Course fees include targets and safety equipment as well as classroom handouts and materials
- Ammo is NOT included
- You will need 50 rounds to qualify with the firearm you will be using on the job
- If you would like to add an additional firearm/s, each firearm will be an additional $25
- You will be allowed 2 opportunities to pass the shooting qualification. If you do not pass the qualification after the second try, there will be a $25 fee each time you wish to retake the qualification.
